Greek philosopher, Plato? That was about 2,400 years ago! Ever s ince then, people all over the world have found it worthwhile
to study the structure of words and sentences.
Why? Because c ompetence in speaking and writing is the hallmark of all e ducated people. Grammar counts. Every time you speak or write a sentence,
your mind is choosing words from the eight parts of speech: nouns, pronouns, verbs, adverbs, adjectives, prepositions,
conjunctions, and interjections. Studying these different kinds o f words—and the basic patterns of English sentences steadily
develops the skills and concepts you need to communicate effectively.
The exercises in this worktext provide a fundamental i ntroduction and review of the rules that govern Standard English.
